The Athena Breast Health Network is a multi-institution, integrated approach to develop and improve women’s breast health. Deidentified blood samples collected from consenting participants are available to researchers and physicians who will use this information to improve breast health care through prevention, screening, and/or treatment.

MARBLES is a longitudinal study for pregnant women who have a biological child with autism spectrum disorder. The MARBLES study, which began in 2006, investigates possible pre-natal and post-partum biological and environmental exposures and risk factors that may contribute to the development of autism. Information about each participant's genetics and environment is collected through a number of sources, including blood, urine, hair, saliva, and breast milk (if the mother is breast feeding), as well as through home dust samples, in order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the environment surrounding each pregnancy. Information is also obtained through interviews conducted with the mother using standardized questionnaires, and by accessing medical records in order to uncover more information about any behavioral aspects or trends that may contribute to the development of autism.

CHARGE (Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and the Environment) is an ongoing California population-based case–control study that aims to uncover a broad array of environmental chemical, nutritional, medical and molecular factors that may influence the risk and severity of autism and developmental delay. Since 2003, the CHARGE study has enrolled > 1,900 participants who are assessed for autism and intellectual disability as well as a range of adaptive and cognitive skills and behavioral development. In addition, information is collected about chemicals in the environment at home and elsewhere, the mother’s and child’s medical histories, residential histories, diet, and other aspects of their lives, before and after the delivery. In some cases the residential histories have been geocoded and linked to exposure databases. Some specimens have been analyzed for chemicals, immune activity, nutrients, genetics, epigenetics, and mitochondrial DNA. The CHARGE study design and approach is based on the premise that autism and developmental delays are multifactorial, that no single factor accounts for all autism cases, nor is there one event or exposure that can be responsible for the rapid increase in diagnoses over the last few decades. Instead, each child’s path to altered brain development may be different. CHARGE human specimen collection includes blood, urine, saliva, hair and deciduous teeth. Additionally, newborn blood spots are obtained from the California Newborn Screening Program. Blood samples have been collected in various tubes, including PAX tubes, from the index children, their parents and siblings. Urine specimens are collected in high density polycarbonate specimen jars with screw caps. Saliva samples are collected using genotek kits, when a blood sample is not feasible or acceptable. Hair samples are collected from the child and mother, and the index child’s first hair clippings if available.

At the UC Davis Neuromuscular Disease Laboratory, we provide processing, histochemical staining, and interpretation of fresh muscle and nerve biopsies of all species. Collaborating with both veterinary and human neuropathologists for over 40 years, the NDL has an extensive repository of both clinical and research specimens, primarily muscle, but also nerve and cerebrospinal fluid.

The Department of Urology have been collecting urologic-related biospecimens (bladder, prostate, kidney) for a variety of research grants and sponsored studies for over 30 years. The collection focus has primarily been on prostate and bladder cancers trying to determine the molecular and genetic abnormalities associated cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

The Canine Genetics Biorepository (Bannasch Laboratory) at the Center for Companion Animal Health (CCAH) located within the UC Davis Veterinary School studies inherited diseases in dogs. They are currently studying gene mutations that lead to bladder stones, cleft palate and cleft lip, hypertrophic osteodystrophy and genetic causes of brain tumors. The canine genetics biorepository contains over 9,400 specimens collected from miniature to large breed dogs. Dr. Danika Bannasch (Biorepository Director) is also the Associate Director of the Genetics Program at the CCAH.

The brain donation biorepository is meant to help understand and develop preventative therapies and a possible cure for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias for future generations. Each brain gives enough tissue to run hundreds of research studies. Patients with or without cognitive impairment can donate to the brain donation program by providing consent and enrolling. At the time of their death, the brain is removed and processed.

The Veterinary Center for Clinical Trials (VCCT) is dedicated to facilitating the initiation and maintenance of clinical trials and any corresponding biospecimen collections. They are a "one-stop-shop" for your veterinary clinical trial needs and facilitate Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) compliance.

Troponin Studies and MIRIAM

The Mutant Mouse Research and Resource Center (MMRRC) at UC Davis is a archive and distribution repository for more than 30,000 mutant mouse alleles maintained in embryonic stem (ES) cells, frozen germplasm (sperm and/or embryos), and live mice. The largest of 4 repositories in this NIH-sponsored national mouse repository consortium, the MMRRC at UC Davis accepts donations of mouse models from individual researchers, and then makes those available for distribution to the biomedical research community. The MMRRC at UC Davis also provides research support services, including microinjection of ES cells and embryo transfer to live litters, cryo-recovery of frozen germplasm to live mice, live mouse colony management, genotyping, phenotyping, and more.

The ENT Biobank also known as the Otolaryngology Department (OD) biobank contains human frozen tissues from Head, Face, Neck, Thyroid and Parotid glands as well as some associated Skin. The biobank is focused on oncology with the majority of samples being malignant tissue obtained from surgical procedures involving the Head, Face or Neck.

The Translational Pathology Core Laboratory (TPCL) is a CAP/CLIA certified research facility in the UCLA Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and a UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Shared Facility.  Since 1996, the TPCL has provided an array of pathology-related services in support of basic, translational and clinical research at UCLA. Our mission is to provide the highest quality pathology services in an efficient and cost-effective manner.  The TPCL also provides expert consultative services to investigators in pathology-related study design, tissue selection, microscopic interpretation, immunohistochemistry, laser capture microdissection, digital image analysis, and IRB-related tissue questions.

UCLA's Athena Breast Health Network is maintained through its breast imaging centers in Westwood, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, and at its affiliate hospital; Olive View Medical Center in Sylmar. The goal of the Athena program is to follow patients from screening, to diagnosis, treatment, and ultimately survivorship, and to provide innovative and individualized treatment across the board.

The UC Davis Pathology Biorepository is a Shared Resource of the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. It is jointly supported by the Cancer Center’s designated NCI support grant and the UC Davis Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The UCDPB is a CAP (College of American Pathologists) accredited biorepository and is one of only 40 such biorepositories in the US. The UCDPB provides high quality, well-characterized cancer and non-cancer related human tissue specimens and other biological materials (blood, urine, etc.) with high quality annotated data using a secure and interactive biospecimen management system. The specimens provided to investigators consist of tissue (fresh/frozen), blood, urine, and various other biological materials as dictated by investigator needs. In addition, the UCDPB has access to all archived formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) blocks at the Pathology Department that can be used for research purposes, a fully equipped histology lab offering standard histology services, immunohistochemistry (IHC), special stains, and Tissue Microarrays (TMAs).

The UCSF Tissue Core Facility is part of the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. It provides high-quality prospective and retrospective tissue specimen procurement services that are annotation-rich. We offer solid tissue rapid freezing, formalin fixed embedded tissues, fresh/viable tissue procurement and biofluid processing.
